Having had a nice trouble free innings with the Lancias for quite a while now, all the gremlins decided to visit the Hayward Garage with a vengeance. First some oil pressure problems appeared on the Integrale and while pondering on how to attack the problem, Francois’s Thema 16V Turbo decided to strip some teeth on the cam belt resulting in the very undesirable effect of bending the valves. So, knowing what to expect I started shopping around for spares. All the bits were located in about 2 days, valves and head bolts from a Q4, and a decoke gasket set from Victor Reinz .

Cylinder head was removed and all was well except for a few nick marks on the pistons where the exhaust valves hit. Exhaust valves were all bent. The inlet valves later turned out to be reusable and is now kept as spares. |

The head was taken to Motor Masters in Bellville for strip down and fitment of the new valves. It was discovered here that the inlet valve guides were a bit worn and needed replacement. In my wisdom I decided to replace them all and a set was duly ordered from the “Oldest Lancia himself, Felix Furtak. Needless to say this ended in a total shouting match and I wondered afterwards why I even bothered to go this route. |

Anyway, a
bit of delay was experienced now (2 days delay) as Johan Meyer of Smithof
Motors in Joostenberg vlakte manufactured a new set for me at 1/3 of the
price that “Oldest Lancia” charged and also in the material of my choice.
This was delivered promptly to Chris Whyman at Motor Masters and the head
was completed, cams fitted and valve clearances adjusted. Total cost for the
work done was about R1200 for the lot and I was a very happy and satisfied
customer.

Assembly of the head was started at once and all the bits and pieces were added back to it.

Eventually the head was installed on the block and torqued up.

Then on went the fuel rail.
|
||
|
Followed by the installation of the plenum chamber and the camshaft and balancing shaft belts, spark plugs and all the necessary bits to make it run again.

Last but not least all the piping was refitted and the result was…… |

a job well done!!!!
Engine was cranked until the oil pressure built up, Tappet cover removed to make sure all cam lobes are getting oil. Final fastening done, cam belt tension and timing rechecked, ignition coils hooked up and Voila, she purrs away at the first swing of the motor. All in all this was a very useful exercise in the sense that alternative sources of spares were found and also some reliable repairers had proved their mettle again. Total cost of everything amounted to about R6500, which is fair comparing prices of similar work to modern 16V motors. An interesting find was a source that can manufacture any engine valve in 214N stainless steel which is superior in strength and hardness than the standard valves. A full set was ordered to check out the quality and at R2300 (VAT included) it is a steal for a full set of 16 valves.
So I guess the Integrale is next on the menu ………. |
